Props to the thousands who are helping with the Japan earthquake

Wood beams strewn about like matchsticks highlight the devastation caused by the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake and its tsunami. (U.S. Navy photo)
It's been a while since my last post, and for that I apologize. I've been working on this.

There is no need for me to go into the details of the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake that struck off the coast of Sendai, Japan on March 11. I'm sure you are aware of the thousands killed by the 9.0 tremor and other powerful earthquakes associated with it, the devastating tsunami that washed away whole towns and the continuing crisis surrounding the nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture.

The purpose of this post is to recognize the thousands who have helped. These people have contributed their talents, knowledge, skills, time and money to help mitigage the effects of the disaster and help those affected get back on their feet. And they come in many forms. The workers at the power plant who are putting themselves at tremendous risk of radiation exposure come to mind.

The lists here are as complete as I could get them, but I'm certain that there is much that I left out. If you see any organization that is missing, please email me at dave@spotlightoncapecoral.com.

Also, please don't take this as an oversight of other disasters. Many of these organizations are helping with them as well. For example, many who have been helping with the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand are helping here, too.

Here in the Cape, people have reacted:

Elisa Collins' sixth-grade classes at Oasis Middle School have been folding origami cranes, both as a gesture and as a fundraiser.

Kobayashi Dojo is cosponsoring a Southwest Florida Symphony benefit concert featuring Reiko Niiya. It's on April 3 at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church in South Fort Myers.

Oasis High School geography teacher Peter N'Diangui has given his students a lesson on natural disasters, using Japan as a foundation.

Residents David and Kerry Ryan told The News-Press that they found out that their son is safe ay via Skype. Johnathan Ryan, an English teacher lives in Aizu-Wakamatsu with his wife Shinobu.

Mario and Florence Cucchiara were also thrilled to find out that a Yoshinao Okubo, whom they hosted when he was an exchange student 40 years ago, was also okay. They told The News-Press that they had initially heard that he was dead.

An another note, the earthquake caused Florida's water table to temporarily rise.

Non-governmental organizations: Dozens of charities have stepped forward to help. Some have been on the ground performing search-and-rescue operations and providing supplies and care. Others are working to raise money for those organizations. All are seeking donations, so be sure to follow the links if you are able to contribute:
